The Unusuals
The saying
of, "Shine Where You Are Planted", comes to mind when I find an antler
that has grown deformed. I can't help thinking that the deer was made
fun of because he was different. I often wonder what they would think
when their deformed friend becomes a work of art. You may be different,
that only makes you unique

MEDICINE WOMAN
Medicine
Woman is a collaboration or work between me and my step-son, J. Scott
Begley. The fallow antler just begged for some art work and Jody loves
Indian art. What better combination could I ask for? With inspiration
from Jill Choate’s intertwine basket I connected the one fallow antler
with three whitetails to make a circle. A story of an Indian woman whose
Medicine Man husband had died and then she was shunned by the tribe
inspired Jody to relate her story in art. The hunting had dried up and
the tribe was in danger. She used her powers that she had learned from
her husband to call the animals. The tribe accepts her as their Medicine
Woman, becoming the first Medicine Woman in the tribe. The age crakes
drawn in the antlers give in impression of an electrical charge given
off by the power of the Medicine Woman. The circle envelopes the tribe
and protects their land. The colors of brown earth and teal sky bring
together the forces that create our world. The twining of Japanese cane
and wax linen represent the unity needed for our survival.

The free form and problem solving in working with antler baskets is what
makes them fun and exciting.
This 18 page book has 69
pictures that help explain how to frame and make rib baskets.
The process of building on
the frame and trimming and inserting ribs is explained along with the
helpful hints to make antler baskets a work of art.
Each antler has its own
character and the art of bringing out the antlers personality is the
adventure of working with antlers.
